At the congregational level, the governing body of a Presbyterian church is called the session. The session is made up of the pastors of the church and all elders in active service (selected by a nominating committee and elected by the members of the church). Session meetings are moderated by a called pastor or a pastor appointed by the presbytery and minutes are recorded by the clerk, who is an elder elected by the session. This body takes care of the guidance and direction of the mission and ministry of the local church. The session also oversees the work of the deacons, a congregational-level group whose duty is to "to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith." In some churches, the responsibilities of the deacons are taken care of by the session, as is the case with FPCS.
